The vessel painted on a cream slip ground in black and red with geometric designs including lotus flowers on the shoulder and bands of leaves and eyes around neck. Intact, free from repairs. Lucanian Red-Figured Bell Krater. Circa 400 B.C. The obverse with a nude gesticulating satyr running to the right, his left leg raised, his arms outstretched, with short curly hair and long beard, characteristic pointy ears and pug nose, a maenad before him, moving right and looking back with short curly hair draped in a chiton; another maenad standing behind him facing left, draped in a himation over a chiton. The reverse with three draped youths; meander with saltire squares below the scenes, laurel below the rim. Intact, some minor repairs. Height 10½".
